What static stretching does to a muscle
In static stretching you hold a position until the muscle gives. Two things happen.
Stretch tolerance rises. You tolerate more pull without anything changing in the tissue in the short term. That is why you feel more supple after stretching.
Stiffness drops. Muscle and tendon give more. And that is precisely the problem before a load: a sprint and a jump depend on the tendon storing energy and giving it back like a stretched rubber band. A softer band gives back less.
That is why static stretching works against what is needed next: explosiveness, jump power, acceleration.
The number that matters
Here it gets more precise, and here is why the debate is so confusing. The loss of performance is not a yes-or-no question but a question of duration.
The reviews on the topic show a consistent pattern: with long hold times of around a minute or more per muscle group, a measurable loss in jump and sprint performance can be shown. With short hold times under about thirty seconds, the effect is so small that it plays no practical role — especially when active warming up follows.

The classic stretching circle at the start is still wrong — not because thirty seconds of pull ruins a player, but because it costs ten minutes in which nothing gets warm. That is the real objection.
Briefly stretching a genuinely shortened structure is unproblematic, as long as five minutes of active warm-up follow.
For injury prevention, stretching before sport offers no demonstrated benefit. That is the point at which the old justification most clearly no longer holds.
What belongs in a warm-up instead
A warm-up has three jobs: temperature, activation, attention. Static stretching delivers none of them.
Movement at rising tempo. Best with a ball, because that switches the head on at the same time.
Active movements through the full range. Lunges with rotation, hip circles, controlled leg swings. That is the part that addresses mobility without losing stiffness.
Strength and balance. Core, leg axis, single-leg stand.
Short accelerations and jumps. So the first sprint in the match is not the first of the day.
That is exactly how modern prevention programmes are built. Specifically: putting 11+ into your sessions and, for the ball-based version, warming up with the ball.
When static stretching does make sense
Static stretching is not bad. It is simply in the wrong place when it comes before the load.
After training. As part of the cool-down, if the players like it. A loss of performance then does not matter.
As a separate session. Anyone with genuine mobility deficits works on them best away from football — on a non-training day or several hours beforehand.
For a specific restriction. A player who cannot squat properly because of shortened hip flexors needs stretching. But as a programme over weeks, not as twenty seconds before kick-off.

What you actually change
The switch costs nothing but a habit, and it can be described in one sentence: the stretching circle at the start is replaced by the same amount of time in movement.
If your team is used to it, an explanation helps more than an instruction. "We stretch after training instead of before, because otherwise you are slower into your first sprint" is understood by every player from U15 up.
And one point that matters more in practice than the whole debate: in the cold, everything takes longer. In winter, five minutes more movement and the intense parts later — that helps more than any argument about stretching.
